The last 10 days have been all about continuing ed

The last 10 days have been all about continuing education for me. Not only did I get to attend the OSBA conference last week, I also attended the annual NASW-Ohio Conference.

It always fills my cup to be in the company of fellow Social Workers. You will not find a stronger group of advocates, leaders, problem solvers, or change makers.

I had the opportunity to take a deep dive into leadership and what it means to be “at the forefront of change.” I explored best practices around how school based services meet students where they are. I examined ways in which we can better serve families who are impacted by poverty. I learned new strategies for engaging refugee and immigrant families in schools. I strengthened my legislative advocacy skills. I gained a deeper understanding of serving diverse populations and cultural competency/cultural responsiveness.

Lastly, I had the privilege of hearing Amy Jo Hutchison speak on poverty bias and how social workers can serve families. It was one of the most powerful, authentic, and empowering keynotes I have ever had the opportunity to hear. You cannot listen to this woman speak without being moved and motivated. (Please Google her testimony to Congress)

My big takeaway: “Every time we make contact we make a difference. The kind of difference we make is a choice.”

Well, that’s a wrap until next year. I’m grateful

Well, that’s a wrap until next year. I’m grateful for another opportunity to connect with fellow school board members across the state and the space to continue learning and gaining new ideas.

Days 2 and 3 of the OSBA Capital Conference were packed. I had the honor of being our district OSBA delegate at the annual business meeting. Much gratitude to all the work that goes into supporting Ohio school boards through OSBA, and many thanks to the school board members who show up to advocate and vote in support of our schools and students.

I also had the opportunity to hear from the State Superintendent of Instruction and the Ohio Teacher of the Year yesterday.

During the breakout sessions, I added valuable insights and best practices regarding school safety, student wellbeing and poverty, strategic improvement, effective community engagement, crisis communication and more. I’m excited to process and practice what I’ve learned!

I also added several books to my personal school board library. Being the avid reader that I am, I can’t wait to dive into these.

What a great start to the Ohio School Boards Asso

What a great start to the Ohio School Boards Association Capital Conference. John Quiñones’ powerful message was definitely a highlight: “How do we unlock the power and light in each and every one of us to say, ‘What can I do?” He shared so many inspiring nuggets.

I also enjoyed a very hopeful session on Student Wellbeing. Looking forward to all things to come on Monday and Tuesday!

You have helped me to send out thousands of postcards, walked hundreds of miles to talk to community members and hand out literature, hosted meet and greets, showed up at events, donated to my campaign, displayed and delivered yard signs, collected signatures, created videos, sent messages of encouragement and support, and helped in numerous other ways!

You also showed up and voted! I am truly honored to be able to serve our schools for another term!
